It is well known that unprotected sun exposure is the primary cause of skin cancers, but it is less talked about as being one of the primary causes of premature ageing. At Facial Aesthetics we are passionate about skin-health and preventative measures to delay the signs of ageing skin and pigmentation.
So what are the different types of sun damage:
Although the suns-rays are so important for producing Vitamin-D….. Ultra-violet (UV) radiation causes skin-cell damage. The 2 main types of UV damage are UVB-for Burning and UVA-For Always there.
From an anti-ageing perspective UVA is the sneaky one as it is there even on those overcast days and causes Free radical oxidative damage and cellular matrix breakdown, this cellular damage causes a change in elasticity and cellular structure of the epidermis and dermis level that contributes to premature skin ageing.
Less talked about is Infrared A damage – This is present all day regardless of weather and is responsible for 1/3rd of solar radiation and collagen breakdown at a deeper hypodermis level.
So what should you do?
Sun avoidance is the foremost measure you can take, however, a Swedish study found sun avoidance was as bad for life expectancy as smoking. So still get yourself out in the sun, but due to the “Always there!” UV we advocate wearing a good quality broad spectrum high factor UVA and UVB (SPF 30-50) sun-protection all year round.
So what do we recommend?
At Facial Aesthetics, we have tried and tested the latest sunscreen ranges that are not freely available on the high street and found that the stand-out brands are…..
- Heliocare 360 Range.
- iS Clinical Extreme Protect 30
- Colorscience Sunforgetable
All these range’s offer high levels of UVA and UVB protection (between SPF 30 and SPF50), but have a unique formulation to treat all kinds of skin.
The uniqueness of the Heliocare 360 range is that there are 6 different formulations that are a perfect match for all skin types, it also contains the patented Fern-block formulation that protects against oxidative stress. The range includes…..
- Colour Cushion compact – Great as a foundation with a subtle bronzing effect
- Oil Free Gel – Which is ultra-light and quickly absorbed
- Fluid Cream – An advanced moisturising complex leaving skin feeling soft and hydrated
- Mineral Fluid – This breathable mineral fluid, which is perfect under make-up
- Airgel – An easily absorbed light and airy mousse
- Oral Capsules – Clinically proven anti-oxidant supplement that defends against free radical damage
In Clinic our favourites are the Airgel and the Mineral Fluid as both are easily absorbed and great as a base layer for make-up!
iS Clinical Extreme Protect is clinically proven to repair and protect collagen and cell DNA with the unique Extremozyme technology which provides the ultimate moisturising protection. This product is simply sublime as it is very hydrating and calming so great for people with more sensitive skin.
Finally, the ABSOLUTE must have “take-with-you” product is Colorscience Sunforgetable This is literally flying off the shelves at our clinic and is perfect if like us, you simply forget to re-apply your suncream when you are out. This product is a great partner used in conjunction with one of the broad spectrum sunscreens. We recommend using iS Clinical extreme protect or one of the Heliocare 360 range as they provide the make-up foundation layer by locking in moisture and absorbing into the skin…. Then later in the day simply brush-on the Colorscience Sunforgetable all mineral shield that provides total protection in a convenient brush on, on-the-go application over makeup. This product is not only dermatologist recommended but is chemical free and allows you to reapply throughout the day over make-up with the fabulous 4 skin tone colours.
It may seem excessive using two types of sunscreen, but you will love the simplistic brush-on powder formulation with the added benefit of providing both sun protection and that sunforgettable Glow!
